WBAP-820 Fort Worth and KEEL-710 Shreveport LA make their final evolutions from full-service (country on WBAP; standards on KEEL) to news/talk. WBAP will keep Bill Mack's overnight country/trucker show. Temporarily, WBAP also keeps country music Sunday afternoons. Long-gone stations back from the grave: KFON Austin (on KMOW-1490) and KBUC-FM San Antonio (on KBUC-FM-98.3) The two stations set to sign on next year time-sharing 91.7FM in Austin got their calls this month. Austin Cooperative got their hoped-for KOOP call letters. UT got KAEM. According to the AUSTIN AMERICAN-STATESMAN, UT will seek to have KAEM replaced with KVRX since KAEM looks too much like A & M - as in rival Texas A & M. The rest of the story (not mentioned in the paper): Texas A & M has a student run cable FM station on the Bryan/College Station cable system called KANM, that has an alternative/ free-form lineup. UT started a cable FM station in Austin a couple of years ago called KTSB. Like KANM, KTSB is student-run and alternative. The goal is to move KTSB onto an over-the-air frequency. However, since KTSB is held already assigned to a station in Iowa, UT can't have them. Aggie-conspiracy at the FCC? Probably not; the calls look to have been randomly generated based on that week's call change list. For example, another station without calls was assigned KAEK (104.9 Eatonville WA).
